gmail is great, it is reliable, it is huge and it is permanent. It has already survived <w tip="Blaise Pascal, Sheffield, UAM (twice), Southampton, TUM & Wolverhampton">six academic email</wz> affiliations (which do not exist anymore but in print and mailing lists). Institutions not only provide cheap, restricted and often broken services, they will not refrain from removing it from you altogether. For instance, with my University of Wolverhampton email, on 28 January (2022), I suddenly lost access to my email, if not logging in from a University computer:
I was oversee then and was cut off the academic world, including funders, until a slow, long and painful recovery process allowing me to gain back access from where I am (not where my computer is).
