This is the most efficient and reliable way (see here for other ways).

gmail is great, it is reliable, it is huge and it is permanent. It has already survived <w tip="Blaise Pascal, Sheffield, UAM (twice), Southampton, TUM & Wolverhampton">six academic email</wz> affiliations (which do not exist anymore but in print and mailing lists). It also does an excellent job at sorting out important emails addressed to me from the ton of advertisements, promotions, forums, social things, etc., that are nicely tabulated.

I have an academic address (fabrice.laussy@csic.es) which however is the recipient for mailing lists and that I consult with 100% attention span only when bored and/or upset.

Institutions not only provide cheap, restricted and often broken services, they will not refrain from removing it from you altogether. For instance, with my University of Wolverhampton email, on 28 January (2022), I suddenly lost access to my email, if not logging in from a University computer:

I was oversee then and was cut off the academic world, including funders, until a slow, long and painful recovery process allowing me to gain back access from where I am (not where my computer is).
