Email

Our emails are:

These are the defaults, regardless of other directions you may find to get in touch with us (?!)

Fp.laussy.jpg My first email ever was fabrice.laussy@goules.nat.fr.

It later become laussy@nat.fr, and then I passed through something like a dozen of other directions, free, yahoo, univ-bp, sheffield, uam, soton, tum, uam again, etc.

My first email linked to a so-called permanent (?!) position is F.Laussy@wlv.ac.uk. Time will show if that is more permanent than the others.

Julia and Luz's emails were opened on 21 March (2021).

Gmail

Gmail.png is great (as is most of Google) and this is the provider we use. Fp.laussy.jpg I run it since 27 February (2007). We also use it professionally, e.g., as contact email in our papers:

To make shortcuts, visit contacts.google.com & create a label there. If importing a large number of emails, create a csv file like the following and import it:

Name,Given Name,Additional Name,Family Name,Yomi Name,Given Name Yomi,Additional Name Yomi,Family Name Yomi,Name Prefix,Name Suffix,Initials,Nickname,Short Name,Maiden Name,Birthday,Gender,Location,Billing Information,Directory Server,Mileage,Occupation,Hobby,Sensitivity,Priority,Subject,Notes,Language,Photo,Group Membership,E-mail 1 - Type,E-mail 1 - Value
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ::: shortcut-name,* ,first.email@gmail.com
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, ::: shortcut-name,* ,second.email@hotmail.com

There might be a simpler way but that's what I found to work. The first line "Name, Given Name..." should be there (maybe one can specify only the entries that one states there).

Unread emails

To find those emails which are unread but lost in the list of several thousand others in Social, Forums, etc.:

category:primary is:unread

Saving emails

Saving the content of an email is not made particularly straightforward by gmail. The most convenient format is .eml which is plain text and encodes attachments, and can be read conveniently with, e.g., Thunderbird.

To export a gmail email as .eml, one must:

  1. Click on the vertical ellipsis on the right ⋮
  2. Download message

Or alternatively, Show Original.

Backups

See this link and/or read this blog post on how to make space in Gmail.

Links

Link to a gmail email is simple if there is no split view, otherwise you need to invoke a bookmarklet, such as this one (read the thread; I called mine gurl).

Labs

If (when) a Labs feature breaks, and you're having trouble loading your inbox, there's an escape hatch. Use https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/?labs=0.

Others

Beyond the web interface, which is okay although not that great, it is useful to have a more powerful application. We like Kmail, the KDE default. For years now we have been using the web application directly, which is good enough.
