Many refer to Orwell's 1984 to describe the times we live in. But this is a zero-th order approximation. A much more accurate picture is Burgess' 1985. There you have everything Orwellian adjusted to our human-rights abiding, democratic and well-meaning societies.

I had a weird feeling of epiphany recently on my «lit de douleurs» through a moving and sudden realization that Schostakowitsch was not Ravel thanks to this moment when he makes his violins weep in the Leningrader: youtube.com/watch?v=GB3zR_… I was suddenly hearing the music speak.
I should probably listen to the Bolero again. I'm trying to reproduce the feeling but it's already an old one and I have lost its precise flavour. Maybe it was a dream.
