We strongly associate Germany with Bavaria, since we lived in this region of Deutschland.
We also associate it to the senseless waste, not only of human lives, but also of cultural treasures and heritage, from the unprecedented destruction the country suffered from WWII:
Würzburg was totally levelled. Dresden is notorious for the atrocious destructions of unique beauty and architectural prowesses (see for instance Slaugtherhouse 5).
When one looks at the cities fortunate to escape major destruction—such as Heidelberg (tacit agreement with British), Regensburg, Passau, Tübingen, Konstanz, Marburg—one gets a sense of what we lost to future generations. Munich for instance looks completely artificial, devoid of soul and history. It looks completely fake, even bits which are not entirely. One still get an idea of what it used to look like, but there is something that went away with the flames, for ever.
