L'Amour Monstre

L'Amour monstre is a 1954 novel by French writer Louis Pauwels, which explore themes of extreme and obsessive passion, to the point of it looking unnatural and even diabolical. It is set in the 16th century and inspired from a true story (Magdeleine de la Croix, in Spain).

It touches upon witchcraft, demonic possession and societal paranoia, evoking a witch-hunt atmosphere, that leads to the torture and gruesome execution of the main character, the doctor Antoine Billet. Dialogues are interesting. The style of Pauwels is not particularly enduring and expressions are sometimes old-fashioned in a cringy way. A few passages are worthy of being remembered, such as the photographic memories of some random-looking moments, but overall the text and story are not particularly memorable.

It seems to have pleased very much Brigitte Bardot (it is unclear why she would read that) who recommended it to Gainsbourg, telling him «Lis ça ! Tu pourrais le méditer, c'est un ouvrage tout à fait pour toi ! Il est écrit à coups de fouet : ça claque à chaque page !» He features it in one of his masterpieces:

Parcourant L'Amour Mon-
stre de Pauwels
Me vint une vision
Dans l'eau de Seltz

The theme is, indeed, here honored for the bewitching and obsession, so something good came out of it.
