The footnote marker of one citation key: the numbered link to the reference, with the full citation (Module:RefPlain) as a tooltip. This is what {{cite}} was until 13 September 2026, and it is still what {{cite}} gives for a single key; it was moved here so that Module:Citer can draw the same marker for each key of a group, {{cite|a,b}}, from inside {{cite}} itself, which MediaWiki would otherwise refuse as a template loop. Not meant to be written in a page: use {{cite}}.
The footnote is named after the key with its first letter in lower case, cite-fano61a for {{cite|Fano61a}} as for {{cite|fano61a}}. MediaWiki reads the first letter of a template name either way, so both spellings bring in the same Template:Fano61a, and a footnote named after the key as typed made them two references with the same text (16 September 2026). {{onlinecite}} names its single marker the same way.
