Klaus Mäkelä directing the Leningrader is really something... You can feel the trap closing in on the invaders. A better performance than even Bernstein's.

How can we let this happen? What could be done here? I don't feel filming it or tweeting about it is anywhere close to the sort of response at stake. We are getting dangerously close to the point where metaphysics will demand blood to be spilt.

I also agree with all that, I'm not saying insults are okay, I'm saying that censorship is never a solution and will definitely be abused. You also say one should know who the abusing people are. True. For that, let us let them speak! Censorship protects them more than Anonymity.

Why is it possible publicly, which has even more impact, but not privately? Is the problem anonymity? (you mentioned that before). Anonymity only further demeans the offender, who is not only tactless but coward. And it's not true anonymity, the editors know (and can make note).

Hey Herbert, let's have a talk about this sometime. You make excellent points but too many to fit in Twitter. I'm not censoring you:) but your arguments deserve full space.

Secrecy is a form of censorship, but temporary. I want it to be known who are the referees, when they're dead: that's History. Secrecy is temporary decency. Censorship is (in the mind of the censor) forever.

You mean I want to censor censorship? Not even, because there are many people who support censorship. I don't want them to be silenced. I want no censorship, but it's fine for people to promote and justify it.

If I'm right, you'll see it soon enough, because it'll eventually reach you. If I'm wrong, I'm just talking nonsense, and this can just let be written down and moved on (not censored, even if it's wrong, because that'd make me right).

That's true, but on some occasions, one can see this happen. We can see people being silenced. We can also see increasing self-censorship, people being scared to express an opinion. I'm happy with people disagreeing, I'm not happy with people being silenced, or intimidated.

Sure, all in favour of transparency and responsibility, which is why I want people to write what they want. The issue is that society evolves in a direction of increased censorship. Nothing concerning me directly, it's purely at "philosophical" level, if you want to call it that.

Is this admissible:
"I mean, WTF.
Which editor is falling for this BS?"
That refers, and publicly, to the work of someone. The opinion, strongly expressed, is from someone that Nature celebrated as a "super-spotter". Should she be censored? Edited? If deleting, what to keep?
Fabrice Laussy
Fabrice Laussy @fplaussy · 18 Sep 2021
@GlazovMikhail Ref: - I think she has the right to say it. Whether this makes her point more or less compelling, and her image as a modern hero of science more or less deserved, is another thing. She shouldn't be censored, though, for calling people's work "bullshit".
Fabrice Laussy
Fabrice Laussy @fplaussy · 18 Sep 2021
@GlazovMikhail And please let's not go into "but on this occasion, this is deserved", because that is the whole problem: where is the limit? Who decides what is to be respected or not? Who guards the guards?
Fabrice Laussy
Fabrice Laussy @fplaussy · 18 Sep 2021

Censorship is also real and with greater consequences. And indeed, this brings us to the main problem: who guards the guards, as you say. As scientists, we shouldn't recognize any highest or ultimate authority. Because there is none. We can disagree, we can't silence the other.

Responsibility, and security, are overly abused excuses. Deleting is changing. You wrote that: "they are responsible I see why they delete things", I only deleted words. And, again, what is appropriate? Is the following appropriate?

I don't like the idea of someone redacting an expert's opinion. If an editor can change the tone, can they also change the content, the meaning, the conclusions? They can refuse to take something into consideration altogether, probably... I don't think they can "redact" it.

I also get my share of disagreeable and uncalled-for comments. These often say more about the reviewer than the work itself. But I wouldn't like any editor to sanitize people's reactions to my work for me. And who knows where they put the limit, this is the main problem.

This refers not to publications, but to confidential referee reports. And what is inappropriate language anyway? Is "this statement doesn't make sense" still appropriate? Is "this statement is false" appropriate? What is today's level of appropriateness? What will it be tomorrow?

Normalizing censorship in instructions for reviewers: «We reserve the right to remove any inappropriate language from your report.» Even in science one now faces the possibility of one's prose being altered. Orwell had the solution: remove words directly from the language itself.

That's a screenshot of the google cache. The cache will definitely go at some point so at least this is not irretrievably lost. A lot of Twitter a YouTube accounts have been suppressed, but it's one step beyond to actually target people's Blogs. This I hadn't seen yet.
