Another day, another series of shattered lives. The chemistry of sheer horror, turning love into hate. It's been a while and I don't know what to think anymore. Now I don't even know what to feel anymore.

Mate in 2 can be quickly solved by retrograde analysis: which piece can deliver the mate? Here there's only one, so the (nice) trick of the puzzle is quickly figured out. It would probably be a much more difficult problem as a mate in 3 where the mating piece wouldn't be obvious.

to be more precise: problem for a Saturday night, what are all the numbers Cₖ,ₙ₋ₖ that solve this equation? Exempli gratia, a constant does (in which case the rhs cst is 1/4) or k!(N-k)! does too (cst is then 1/6).

I've been playing a bit more with the AI, trying to make it contemplate various ideas from, mainly, Physics. It's where it performs best. Humour, politics and theology are terrible; gender and adult themes are censored. Here is how its stable diffusion looks at Gravitation.

When I say "Physics", it's really classical (non-quantum). It's terrible at abstract stuff, although you'd think it can do neat things with cats, boxes and ethereal spheres spinning, vibrating & disappearing. Seems like neural networks are still too small for Hilbert space ideas.

A prize is always a responsibility more than an honour. Here is a History-textbook demonstration of how to stand up to the duty that such recognition entails: not being glad or honoured, or even humbled, but fighting even harder for a mission now entrusted by humanity as a whole.

My web just achieved 10 million views. Not bad for something developed for my own needs, e.g., to remind me that Hopfield is a physicist (laussy.org/wiki/John_Hopf… ⇒ Whatever Happened to Solid State Physics?) or that he had no Google Scholar in 2015 (laussy.org/wiki/Blog:Scie…).

I didn't know about Hinton but Hopfield is a top-rate physicist. His work on the polariton effect back in the 50s is both extremely fundamental and insightful. That he turned so early to neural networks always signalled to me there's more to them for physics than physicists know.
