New work published: @PhysRevA 101, 063824 (2020) - Tuning photon statistics with coherent fields journals.aps.org/pra/abstract/1… ; this one took us a looooot of time, I'll tell you the story.

Great read. Another 25 years... that time frame has been a constant since about 1980.

The wavelet decomposition [https://t.co/QARFJUaJsM] has much to tell us about what wavefunctions do. This (in our last paper) is how @david__co understands Airy beams, those strange packets that accelerate without being pushed: journals.aps.org/prresearch/abs…
Fabrice Laussy
Fabrice Laussy @fplaussy · 15 Jun 2020
What happens is that the wavepacket folds onto itself, producing a self-interference, i.e., fringes, that the eye can't help but track, giving the feeling that such peaks are physical objects. Whence the free-acceleration (the centroid, which the eye doesn't see, goes linearly).
Fabrice Laussy
Fabrice Laussy @fplaussy · 15 Jun 2020
The beauty is that this "representation" of the wavefunction has a neat and physically clear structure: the various lines plotted on top. Although the full solution ('s analytical expression) is unknown to us, its skeleton is very simple. That is Physics.
Fabrice Laussy
Fabrice Laussy @fplaussy · 15 Jun 2020
Even the diffusing Gaussian wavepacket gets an interesting new reading in this representation (that's in the appendix), with a clear visualisation of the motion "of the modes" that otherwise gets lost into diffusion.
Fabrice Laussy
Fabrice Laussy @fplaussy · 15 Jun 2020
And, also in the appendix, the typical "last but not least", by doctoring up the wavepacket in its wavelet form, namely, cutting off its tails, we expect to preserve the magical properties of the Airy beams, by protecting the self-interference. And indeed that's what happens.
Fabrice Laussy
Fabrice Laussy @fplaussy · 15 Jun 2020
Now the finite-energy Airy beam accelerates for much longer times. It's not clear how to dynamically cut the tails like that (again, that's in the appendix) but it shows this stuff in wavelet space means something, which has much to tell us about what wavefunctions do.

This is actually fairly comforting, it shows that when there's at least a bit of science involved, there's only so far politics can go in bypassing the truth. It's not easy to cheat without being caught. Even considerable political weight cannot choke science completely.

Carlos is looking for a PhD student. Be his first, you certainly won't be his last and that'll make you special when you speak at the many events ahead (his 75th birthday, his Nobel prize, his death...) And you'll do great things in the meantime.

With legal & governmental actions following this paper, this'll make the Schön scandal a naughty mischief in comparison. That's not a fight between science & ego or science & ethics, but between science and state propaganda. Not a paper withdrawal but people's lives are at stake.
