This is an excellent review on single-photon imaging, with a good description of the various camera technologies.

There is a strong focus on SPDC source.

According to the Authors, the quantum correlations motivated imaging:

The availability of such a state and the simplicity of its generation — which requires only a nonlinear crystal to be pumped with a laser — initiated the development of new types of imaging experiments. Through these experiments emerged the field of quantum imaging.

They credit Jost et al.[1] with the first study of spatial quantum correlations:
