Linux is the best operating system around, since, actually, it has been around.
Installing it used to be a heroic effort.
Nowadays, it oscillates between straightforward to tricky (especially if you pick up hardware with one piece of setup that is not supported).
I like kubuntu (mainly because I like KDE).
This page details the process. This is most easily achieved from the command line:
sudo dd if=Downloads/kubuntu-21.10-desktop-amd64.iso of=/dev/sdd conv=fdatasync
Booting from the new volume always involves a bit of fiddling, usually with BIOS. Good luck.
Now the operating system itself can be installed, which is another problem altogether.
(previous lost in the chaos of memories).
On 27 February (2022), I set up Ubuntu 21.10 (codename impish) on covid (computer) to restore the packages. I didn't choose the long-term support option, which might turn out to be a mistake in June or so.
