The Black Country

Black by day and red by night.

The Black Country is that part of the West Midlands (in England) which is west of Birmingham. The name possibly comes from the soot deposited on Darwin's countryside by the industrial revolution, which was raging there, following the Iron Bridge. It nowadays has a rather bleak reputation, to the point where people in the train would ask you why you're going there, and even estate companies get puzzled at your plans to rent a place in this area (all this is true; we still don't believe it ourselves although it happened to us personally and repeatedly).
