In this introductory Chapter, I will discuss, at the level of general physics, the theory of spontaneous emission, as an introduction to Quantum Electrodynamics (QED). Then, I will revisit this phenomenon in the context of cavity QED and of semiconductor physics, giving an overview of the state of the art.
