Photon Correlations. L. Mandel and E. Wolf in Phys. Rev. Lett. 10:276 (1963).  What the paper says!?

This criticizes Ref. [1] and is criticized by Glauber in Ref. [2]. Most importantly, is the statement:

the stochastic semiclassical description [...] ceases to be useful when the wave field cannot be represented classically by a Gaussian probability distribution. We do not believe this to be the case.

In this, they were wrong.

They make it even worse by quoting in a footnote:

Since this was written, E. C. G. Sudarshan [Phys. Rev. Letters 10, 277 (1963)] has demonstrated that the semiclassical and the quantum mechanical descriptions are completely equivalent to each other as long as no nonlinear effects are considered.

The paper by Sudarshan is actually the next one in the journal, opening on the same closing page as this one.[3]
