I don't know yet; right now, a prisoner under the
Gayssot Act, if I understood well, someone in jail for books and/or opinions, such as labelling himself a racist. Previously, possibly just an obscure extremist. Now, behind bars, an instant classic of the subversive literature.

This man in yellow, who was accidentally featured on the cover of a leading magazine, has been jailed because of his declarations and/or writings. I've never read him but now feel I have to since I am curious to read by myself what it is that one can write that sends you to jail.

He wrote 12 books according to Wikipedia. Not knowing nor finding details of his production and if a piece is particularly targetted I'll try to find his 1st (Les Espérances planétariennes) and last (L'Antisémitisme, sans complexe ni tabou: Plaidoyer pour la liberté d'expression)
Fabrice Laussy
Fabrice Laussy @fplaussy · 22 Sep 2020
Regardless of what I find in there, needless to say, I consider the decision to jail someone for opinions—however vacuous, deplorable or hateful they might be—utterly unacceptable. For sure this is a consecration for him. Whatever is motivating the "sanction" is deeply mistaken.

Fabrice Laussy
Fabrice Laussy @fplaussy · 15 Sep 2020

That is censoring scientists. Even cranks, loonies, conspiracy theorists should not be censored. But here, this is censoring a recognized, established and leading scientist. As a scientist myself, I must denounce this intolerable and dangerous censoring of science by @YouTube.

12 invitations for @PhysWlv 's IOP program were extended, 4 were declined. Assuming equal probability to decline from men & women and 20% women physicists (the main issue there), such a scenario of a male-only lineup had >16.7% chance to occur.
Fabrice Laussy
Fabrice Laussy @fplaussy · 9 Sep 2020
Unlucky, but this also proves that when @physwlv tells you, and please check, that our seminars are given by women in the proportion of 1/4, this isn't to fulfil a gender-focused objective, this is because we are genuinely inclusive and not gender-biased, one way or the other.
Fabrice Laussy
Fabrice Laussy @fplaussy · 9 Sep 2020
We do pride ourselves in making *no* discrimination whatsoever. Not even so-called positive ones. So we did not strive to secure female speakers on that criterion, when those we contacted declined.
Fabrice Laussy
Fabrice Laussy @fplaussy · 9 Sep 2020
That is, in my view, a genuine sign of respect and recognition of women, to treat them as scientists and nothing else.
Fabrice Laussy
Fabrice Laussy @fplaussy · 9 Sep 2020
If your point is that we are sexists, please look up the evidence; follow @PhysWlv, browse our history, and you'll see that women play a great, valued and central role in our group, activities and development. Although not as women. As scientists.
Fabrice Laussy
Fabrice Laussy @fplaussy · 9 Sep 2020
If your point is that there must always be a threshold of women (and please place a figure), then this is open to debate. Events which systematically feature at least 20% of women from a community with the same proportion, tell you: we put some there *because* they are women.
Fabrice Laussy
Fabrice Laussy @fplaussy · 9 Sep 2020
That might be how the Physics/Scientific community wants things to happen. I'm not even against that, if that's a cure, or even a policy, but so far, I have never treated a fellow scientist according to their gender. Or race, or religion or anything but their Science.
Fabrice Laussy
Fabrice Laussy @fplaussy · 9 Sep 2020
And that's how you get, time to time, not often, but enough to get someone's attention when they look hard enough for this sort of things, a sampling not faithful to the full distribution.

So now we have contacts on that topic. We'll make sure to interest them in giving a talk on that question at our event next year, unless someone wants to press the issue forward, in which case I'll happily step down to leave women's under-representation get immediate attention.
Fabrice Laussy
Fabrice Laussy @fplaussy · 9 Sep 2020
Because we agree that there is a misrepresentation of women in Physics, and that a lot can be done to address this. But this must be done in good-faith, good-will and in-depth, not superficially by brushing aside simple statistical facts and jumping at people's throat.
