The largest of the Greek islands and the fifth largest in the Mediterranean Sea, south of the Peloponnese.
Crete is approximately 260km long and 60 kmwide with a population of $\approx$650,000. It contains the southernmost European city (Ierapetra).
It is where the Minoan civilization, the earliest recorded civilization in Europe, flourished before it got wiped out by a tsunami and mainland Greece took over.
Beyond its spectacular natural beauty (including the biggest gorges in Europe), it is unique for its varied architecture (ancient Minoan heritage, Greek culture, Roman invasion, the Venetian era, and the Turkish/Ottoman period.)
We visited the place at the occasion of the PLMCN conference (14th edition). Pictures will come later.
