Adolphe Thiers

«La cause de la justice, de l’ordre, de l’humanité, de la civilisation a triomphé.» (en)
Adolphe Thiersafter he crushed the Commune.

French political figure, the inventor of modern democracy: the illusion that people have of some involvement, justifying their repression when the actual direction that is taken is not quite the one they would have wanted despite fabricated contentment.

I discussed the concept in more details in a blog post, when comparing images from Australia which we are supposed to see as evil (people peacefully demonstrating) with others which we are supposed to see as rightful and orderly (police violence and intimidation). The fact that many of us would see a brotherly walk against political measures as wrong and heavily armed factions repressing them as good, is the victory of Thiers.
