The three most important natural motivators of human endeavor and excellence:
External rewards extinguish intrinsic motivation, diminish performance, crush creativity, crowd out good behavior, encourage cheating, become addictive, and foster short-term thinking.
While complying can be an effective strategy for physical survival, it's a lousy one for personal fulfillment. Living a satisfying life requires more than simply meeting the demands of those in control. Yet in our offices and our classrooms we have way too much compliance and way too little engagement. The former might get you through the day, but only the latter will get you through the night.
Control leads to compliance; autonomy leads to engagement
The goal of the future is full unemployment so we can play!
Technology was never meant to increase productivity and growth so that we can work for longer hours, anywhere, any time, from any device. That's insanity. It was meant to make our lives better.
