Hans Dehmelt

Hans Georg Dehmelt, 9 September (1922)‒7 March (2017), was (${1\over4}$ of) the 1989 Nobel prize of Physics with Wolfgang Paul for their development of the ion trap and Norman Ramsey.

He introduced, among other things, the idea of shelving which led to the quantum-jump craze, that he also first observed.
