Gmail.png is great (as is most of Google) and this is the provider we use. Fp.laussy.jpg I run it since 27 February (2007).

To make shortcuts, visit & create a label there. If importing a large number of emails, create a csv file like the following and import it:

There might be a simpler way but that's what I found to work. The first line "Name, Given Name..." should be there (maybe one can specify only the entries that one states there).

It used to be simple to link to a gmail email, but now you need to work your way through. Namely copy this bookmarklet and apply it to the Show Original email.

Beyond the web interface, which is okay although not that great, it is useful to have a more powerful application. We like Kmail, the KDE default. For years now we have been using the web application directly, which is good enough.
